Collaboration with St Nicholas Primary School

Collaboration with St Nicholas Primary School

I have recently been involved in a volunteering project working with year 5 and 6 pupils from St Nicholas Primary School, Cardiff. The main aim of the project was to introduce digital technology to the students with the use of GarageBand and Green screen.

These pictures below demonstrate collaborative learning as we are working together in order to create a video for the green screen.

Furthermore, I believe that this collaborative project really helped the students interact with each other which meant that their learning experience was enhanced. This could potentially link in with Piagets theory where he promotes social interaction within the classroom, this also showed me that collaborative learning really can encourage students to interact with others which leads to increase engagement. This project has really helped me to see a real life experience of collaborative learning and working with these students certainly has helped me understand the concept greater.

The photograph shows collaborative and cross curricular learning, the children and working together in order to achieve an outcome or goal. This can link in with Hattie’s research (2009), where he found that both cooperative and competitive learning are more effective for learners than individualistic methods. Furthermore, it sets up for a higher student involvement. I particularly noticed this when I was taking part in this project due to all students wanting to get involved and participate, even the more reserved students were wanting to participate. This could potentially mean that collaboration and team work are a fantastic combination in the classroom, due to the high engagement I have witnessed just from this small project I firmly believe that this would be extremely successful throughout the primary education system.

Overall, the children seem to thoroughly enjoy the digital session learning new skills with new people. They really engaged with us, working collaboratively together to create fantastic outcomes in a short space of time. From working with these children, it has really helped me gain real life experiences of collaborative work and see how it actually occurs in the classroom, I can also see more clearly how certain theories such as Piagets and Vygotskys link in well with real life classroom experiences.
